Costa Rica – Post Trip

Costa Rica is a country that has deep cultural roots based on the pura vida lifestyle. Their culture affects business, economy, and personal life. The businesses in Costa Rica heavily support sustainability in which focus on recycling and low usage systems are constantly applied. My favorite business we visited was Florex because of not only their sustainability practices applied to production but also the culture of the employees. I loved how the speaker invited the group back to stay with him in his home. I wish Florex was sold in the United States and believe with added marketing and social media techniques we can see their company expand beyond Costa Rica in the next 10 years.

My favorite activity we participated in was the cultural experience. I feel like visiting a local home gave us the true perspective of how citizens interact with visitors. I learned about true aspects of the food culture and dance of their nation. I loved how we were welcomed with a piece of their heritage and left with a hug. I remember how the first day Rocio mentioned that Costa Ricans will hug each other and that action showed through with the family.

Costa Rica has inspired me to pursue deeper interest into international business and politics. Their business model shows productivity can go hand in hand with happiness. International companies have even moved to Costa Rica and adapted practices of the Nation while staying successful such as IBM and Align. My dream is to one day own my own public relations/ marketing firm. I would love to grow large enough to work with the people of Costa Rica and be able to implement the business practices I learned into my own company as well as at my current job.  A great dream!

Costa Rica – Day 4

My experience in Costa Rica so far has been absolutely magical! If I had to describe the trip in one word I would say a “dream”. I have not only learned immensely about how business is conducted in different cities but also how Costa Rican’s incorporate happiness into their work life.

Costa Rica is the happiest place on the planet because they do not let small problems affect their daily lives. Their culture incorporates “go with the flow” nature. Costa Ricans treat everyone as family and are accepting of whoever walks through their doors no matter their background, race, nationality, or personal views. At the cultural dinner and experience, for example, Eli connected with me on a more personal level and even gave me her phone number to be friends past the short visit. The group hugged everyone as we left.

Happiness in Costa Rica derives from their love of people. Everyone is family and everyone is invited into their culture. When we toured Florex, the speaker even said “if you come back to Costa Rica we invite you to stay in our homes and be apart of our family.” He also mentioned that in a business sense he knows all of his coworkers and deeper, he knows their children, spouses, parents, grandparents etc. Costa Rican’s go further into happiness by helping each other out when anyone is in need. The speaker at Florex explained that if your roof needs repairs, not only will your coworkers help you financially but they will put in the labor required.

Costa Rica is also a happy place because of the governmental and employment benefits they receive. Citizens do not have to worry about health care or paying for education. Employee benefits can vary but for example, employees at Align have access to professional assistance for free such as lawyers, realtors, and vets.

I would love if the United States had the same mindset of equality and helping out your peers as Costa Rica does. The world would be a much happier place if we all treated each other like Costa Rican’s do and live the Pura Vida lifestyle!

Costa Rica – Day 3

Florex is a sustainable producer of cleaning products that was founded by the goal of creating safer alternatives for humans and the environment.

The first approach they use for developing products is establishing a formula that excludes the use of palm oil to help save the destruction of natural forests specifically in Indonesia. They have labs on site that help them conduct experiments on formulas that are safe for use, environmentally friendly, and are desirable in regards to smell and purpose. When producing the formula they are begging to reduce the amount of water they use by creating a concentrate which also reduces the amount of packaging needed to present the final product to customers. They also built their warehouse in an environmentally friendly style. The warehouse includes plastic roof pieces that strand the length of the warehouse so that way while products are being packaged and made, natural lighting can be used to conserve energy. They use strategic builds with gaps to allow for air flow without having to use electricity for air conditioning.

The packing itself follows sustainable goals by that they use reuse industrial size bottles by refilling them and smaller bottles they break down to be made into new bottles for future customers.

Costa Rica – Day 2

IBMs business approach involves using software systems to help clients with improving efficient operations with systems and security. The company as a whole focuses on employee education and knowledge. They have many programs that employees can use to gain skills in various aspects of the job outside of their specific department. The speaker almost mentioned that 98% of employees feel like the can be themselves sheiks they are at work.

They offer services globally while their Costa Rica location primarily focuses on cloud computing and security. They offer products of AI and blockchain as well. The largest department in the location we visited was security which is also the largest for IBM world wide.

Within Costa Rica they incorporate adaptability into their work environment. Employees are encouraged to be flexible as indicated by their logo with a 🐝. Bee Flex was originally started after the pandemic to encourage employees to return the the traditional office environment after working hybrid. Employees do not work completely in office and times are designated by their specific position/ role within the company.  They incorporate more of the relaxed culture into their daily work schedule by allowing employees to watch sports teams while at their desk and designating an area for break time that includes free snacks, video games, and comfortable furniture. Today we saw employees being able to watch soccer games while at their desk specific to the culture of Costa Rica.

They faced challenges of bringing a corporate environment into the pura vida lifestyle. They combatted this challenge by generational change in allowing less discipline when it came to specifics of dress code and employee benefits. They are diverse in their Human Resources structure by incorporating global concepts into specific plans made for Costa Rican employees.

Costa Rica – Day 1

Essential Costa Rica creates the essence of the Costa Rican brand. The brand is created to establish the values of the country and how the residents feel about their culture. Branding is focused on sustainability and pura vida. The second aspect is the Marketing of Costa Rica which is more focused on the tourism and economic aspect of the country. Procomer is the marketing aspect of Costa Rica which plays into exports and imports. CINDE works with attracting national companies to Costa Rica with their 5 point reasonings which include, experience, talent, productivity, location, and stability.

A country brand is focused on the perception of Costa Rica while the destination brand is focused on marketing for tourism.

The United States brand is more focused on ideas of freedom and rights through individualism rather than Costa Rica which is focused on community and collaboration for growth. I feel as if the brand of costa rice is more clear and defined in comparison to the United States. The US does not have as many governing bodies and companies who participate in US branding.

I am defined by my values of education, travel, and collaboration. My community, relationships, and experiences all contribute to my essence. I value learning and understanding. I enjoy experiencing new cultures and getting to be apart of new worlds. I am happy to gain knowledge in Costa Rica and learn about their essence.

On my way to Study Abroad in Costa Rica

Before departing for Costa Rica, I sat down and thought about all the benefits this trip offers my personal, education, and overall life development.

Education: I am excited to take a course in another country. Having the study abroad credit will allow me to graduate earlier than expected with my MBA. I believe that participating in study abroad sets a student apart from others when applying for jobs post graduation. Study abroad gives students the opportunity to see how other cultures value knowledge and education. The logistics of this specific study abroad program also fit well with my current lifestyle. 10 days is the perfect amount of time for my to leave my full-time job and be able to gain course credit in another country.

The Class: International has always been an interest of mine. My concentration in the MBA program is International Business. I believe this class and concentration will help me better understand the origins of different business worlds and fulfill my want to learn about various cultures. I hope this class will give me a better perspective on how Costa Rica competes at the same level of developed countries in their production, trade, and sustainability. I am most excited for the Don Juan Coffee tour because that is what I believe Costa Rica is known for. Everyone that I have told that I am visiting Costa Rica and who have also traveled to the country has had the most positive comments about the coffee.

Personal: I absolutely love traveling and especially immersing myself in the country in which I am in. I can not wait to participate in the nature walks, zip-lining, boat tours, etc. I plan to engage myself in the true value of Costa Rica as much as possible. My favorite aspect of the trip that I have learned about so far is how we are mostly staying in locally owned hotels. Staying in the cabins that overlook the Volcanoes has sold me on the experience. I can’t even begin to image the beauty we will see when we are able to wake up in the morning and step outside to see the landscape of the country. This is a true dream of mine.

Companions: This trip also brings a unique aspect to me because of who I will be joining. Being able to travel with individuals who share my love for learning, exploration, and adventure excites me. I like that our group also will be partnered with Nichols which gives us the opportunity to network with other professionals in our degree plan. I also like that Dr.Lanier has so much experience with traveling to Costa Rica. I believe we have so many advantages with our travel group that I would not have if I decided to take this trip alone.

Overall Hopes: My goal of this trip is to come by and share how countries outside of the U.S. are thriving based on their native products and environment. I am extremely interested in learning more about the unique aspects of operating a business in different cities in Costa Rica. I have questions which include- How does a day look for production in factories and farms?, What differences do you see in the business culture between Costa Rica and the US?, and lastly, How does the motto “Pura Vida” play into the Costa Rican Business world?

Gifts for Seniors: Holiday Shopping Locally in Mobile

Did you know that you can find unique gifts and experiences while supporting the Mobile community when you shop locally this holiday season?  When buying gifts for seniors, consider purchasing from local businesses that our in-home care clients have watched open, know the owner of, and even may have shopped at for years.

To make your Christmas shopping easier, Home Care Associates has compiled a list of our favorite local businesses in Mobile that are great destinations for holiday gifts.

Holiday Markets

If you are searching for various local gifts, consider visiting a local holiday-themed market. Two of our favorites are Fall Market in the Park and The Mobile Flea Market. The best thing about local markets is that they are constantly changing. Each time you visit, you can find a hidden gem. Gifts for seniors at the market may include a custom art piece, a variety of baked goods, local craft work, or a hand-made sweater. If you are still indecisive, bring your loved one along with you so they can enjoy the holiday season shopping experience and make your gift list a little easier!

Heritage Gift Shops

Although local markets can provide unique cultural gifts, not everyone can make it to the specific time frames they are open. Luckily, Mobile has local shops that support artists and craftspeople in the area year-round.

For loved ones with a sweet tooth, check out Three Georges Candy Shop, a local Mobile shop that has been open since 1917. The company offers homemade chocolates, cakes, pies, and their famous pralines. Visit their website to explore the recipes they use and order your holiday gift baskets before they are sold out!

threegeorgescandyshop

Citrus and Cane is a home fragrance and body care specialty business that has a storefront in Mobile and offers monthly subscription services. The Scent of the Month subscription is $30 a month and sends the recipient a themed care package on the first of every month. The care packages often include wax melts, body wash, lotion, soap, and a candle. Our in-home care clients will love this gift because they receive a new present delivered straight to their door every month!

Experiences

Mobile is a historic city that offers an abundance of activities that are accessible to elderly groups of individuals. And as you know, the best gifts for in-home care clients and loved ones bring them joy and create new memories. For nature-loving elderly individuals, the Mobile Botanical Gardens offers the most extensive collection of plant life on the gulf coast. Plan a visit here with your loved one, or consider purchasing them a membership so they can view the gardens every season. The Gardens offer senior discounts on memberships and even have packages that allow each member to be accompanied by a friend (or a Home Care companion) during each visit! Memberships also include discounts that can be used at all plant sales.

Another unique local experience that your senior may enjoy is a dinner cruise! The Perdido Queen offers dinner, comedy, and live music river cruises that can accommodate small groups and large parties. A nostalgic riverboat dinner allows elderly individuals to enjoy the cruising experience and return to the comfort of their homes the same evening! They offer online gift certificates for cruises that give your loved one a physical gift to open but leave the experience to be the best part! The gift certificates allow you to go ahead and purchase your cruise ticket but pick your scheduled date after you have more time to plan with those who will accompany you. Home Care Associates is excited to help your loved one plan for these experiences and can even have their caregiver tag along!

Activities

The best gift we can give an elderly individual is quality time and memories.

So book a local activity you and your loved one can do together to make their Christmas season extra special.

Asthetik Photo Studio and Event Space is located in downtown Birmingham and provides a photo shoot location and recommends professional photographers. You can create priceless memories by booking your family a private session centered around your senior. Family portraits in photo frames, memory books, and calendars are unforgettable gifts for seniors.

Another excellent idea for crafty seniors, visit Paddywax Candle Bar. They offer custom candle-making sessions and take-home candle-making kits that can be paired with virtual tutorials on their website. Home Care Associates’ Guide To Gifts For Seniors

Holiday gifts for seniors can be challenging to purchase because we want unique products that are useful in the individual’s everyday lives. When shopping for gifts for grandparents, parents, or elderly loved ones, we aim to spark joy and love. So how do we show those who have watched us grow up and supported us through life endeavors that we care?

The Home Care Associates Team recommends gifts that focus on feelings of warmth, comfort, and inclusivity. We have created an Amazon list of gifts for seniors that bring the joy of Christmas into the lives of our in-home care clients!

Top Holiday Gifts for Seniors:

Weighted or Heated Blanket

A blanket always provides heat and warm feelings for our in-home care clients. Take your gift a step further and consider a heated blanket if your individual usually is cold-natured or a weighted blanket if they struggle with anxiety or loneliness. Check out this 2-in-1 Heated Weighted Blanket if they follow into both categories!

E-Reader

Give the gift of unlimited books! This gift for grandparents, parents, or elderly friends gives them complete access to an at-home library. Reading also can help improve memory and strengthen the brain.

Non-Slip Socks and Shoes

Gifts that provide safety for our clients are greatly advised. Non-slip socks and shoes help to prevent in-home falls, especially on slick flooring such as wood. AARP also provides a detailed guide for choosing the correct footwear for elderly individuals.

Luxury Pajama Sets

Comfort is critical when shopping for in-home care clients. Luxury pajama sets are a great choice, especially in the winter, because they are cozy and versatile. Why not strut around your home in fancy new pajamas?

Smart Watch

Smartwatches are another safety gift that allows clients to make a call in an emergency quickly. Watches provide tracking benefits, time-management control, access to medical information, and rapid communication. Forbes provides a list of the best smartwatches for elderly individuals, with prices ranging from $55 to $280.

White Noise Machine

If your loved one struggles with getting to sleep, staying asleep, or having sleep anxiety, a white noise machine is a perfect gift! Background noise can provide a calming atmosphere and allow individuals to focus on resting their bodies. This machine from Amazon provides calming sounds and creates warm lighting for your bedroom.

Activity Books

Mind training activity books are simple, easy, and affordable Christmas gifts for seniors. Activity books include crossword puzzles, word searches, coloring books, and sudoku. Training one’s mind using word exercises can help to delay memory loss and lessen confusion.

Magazine Subscription

Give a gift that lasts for more than a day! Magazine subscriptions help your loved ones stay updated with current topics and provide a monthly surprise. Some of our favorite magazines at Home Care Associates are Southern Living and Reader’s Digest, which provides a large print edition!

Smart Speaker

Voice-activated smart speakers are perfect gifts for seniors because individuals can ask the device to give news updates, play music, add items to shopping lists, set timers, or send messages to loved ones. The Amazon Echo Dot is a smart speaker that acts as a personal assistant. Your loved one has the opportunity to feel like they are living the extravagant life of a celebrity with a smart speaker assistant!

Digital Photo Frame

When traveling is difficult, digital photo frames help in-home care clients stay connected to their family members and loved ones. A digital photo frame provides images in a slideshow format that can be submitted by anyone given access to the device. Photos can be the simplest yet most meaningful gifts for grandparents, parents, or older friends.

A complete gift guide can be found on Amazon with links to all products recommended!

The Opioid Crisis

The Opioid Epidemic in South Louisiana

In my senior year of college at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, I had the opportunity to work with the District Attorney’s Office of Lafayette to help combat the opioid epidemic. My team created a strategic communication campaign that can be used by District Attorney Don Landry to inform the public of how opioid use can be reduced. Attached below is the full campaign that won first place for the class of Strategic Campaign Management in the Department of Communication.

The opioid epidemic in South Louisiana has been an ever-growing problem since marketing new pain management drugs in the early 1990s. Red Hot Innovations approached the office of the District Attorney for the 15th Judicial Court in August of 2021 to assist in creating a strategic communication campaign. The DA’s office has recently implemented innovative criminal procedures to help combat the growing opioid abuse and use rate in South Louisiana. Still, it is unaware of how to relay resources and information to reduce the number of non-violent opioid-related cases. Red Hot Innovations proceeded to conduct both primary and secondary research to implement the best possible strategic campaign for the office of the District Attorney.

The campaign focuses on non-violent drug crimes in Lafayette, Vermillion, and Acadia Parishes. According to Governor John Bel Edwards, as of 2018, there were over 450 opioid-related deaths in the state of Louisiana, and the number has continued to increase. The CDC has also ranked Louisiana 5th in the nation for prescribing drugs classified as opioids. The District Attorney’s office is the primary source for individuals facing criminal prosecution. With the creation of the District Attorney’s Pre-Trial intervention program and Drug Court program, the office wanted to make its target audience better aware of their efforts to help reduce the opioid epidemic.
